“Try Again” by W.E.Hickson

Summary by Hoorain Tariq

“Try Again” is a short, thoughtful and moralizing poem brilliantly composed by the British poet, William Edward Hickson. The poet has conveyed a universal and optimistic message in a simple yet convincing style.

He states , in the first stanza of the poem, that if we are unsuccessful in our first attempt, we should not be disappointed. We should try again because then we will become courageous. If we keep on moving ahead and persist courageously, we will surely overcome at the end. We should not be afraid of the failures, but rather learn from the defeats and should continue trying again to be successful.

In the second stanza , the poet says that though we may fail once or twice . However, if we keep on trying, we will succeed. If we do not win a race we should not give up and should keep on struggling as there is no dishonour in trying. So we should try again.

Thomas A. Edison, the famous scientist, has wonderfully conveyed the same lesson in these words. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

In the final stanza of the poem the poet portrays an important fact that, “hard work is the key to success”. If we find that our task is hard, even then we should continue to try again as time will bring the reward of our determination and effort. If we stay patient, we can also do what other people can do. Therefore, we need patience and just keep this rule in mind that we should try again.

In short, this beautiful poem abounds in the lessons of success, courage, perseverance, persistence  and patience. Although, there may be numerous difficulties and failures, in life, we should never lose patience, for no doubt, patience is the plaster for all sores. We should keep on trying again and again to overcome the failures and hardships by adopting the virtues of courage, perseverance and patience.
