“The Rain”by W.H.Davies

Summary by Hoorain Tariq

“The Rain” is a brief, thought provoking and symbolic poem written by William Henry Davies, one of the most well-known poets of his era. His favourite themes are nature and the hardships of the poor.

In this poem the poet has skillfully portrayed two marvels of nature i.e. rain and sunshine. The poet shares his experience that, as the rain falls on the leaves of a tree, he hears the sweet sound of the raindrops falling on the leaves. He feels as if he hears the top most rich leaves sipping rain and passing on the remaining drops to the poor lower leaves.

He further states that when the sun comes out after the rain stops , it will fill each and every dark round rain drop, on the leaves, with an amazing  light. The poet hopes that the sun will shine brightly on all the drops and it will be  an attractive scene of nature.

The upper leaves stand for the upper class of society whereas the poor leaves represent the lower or poor class of society. So, it means that the rich get the best opportunities first and the leftover passes down to the poor masses.

However the final message of the poem is of hopefulness. The poet hopes to see equality in society just as the sunshine which scatters over the whole world equally.

“After the rain, the sun will reappear.
There is life. After the pain, the joy will still be here.”
